Languages Week 2022
The School of Applied Language and Intercultural Studies (SALIS) and Fiontar & Scoil na Gaeilge, at DCU are pleased to announce DCU Languages Week 2022 supported by Languages Connect.
Open to all interested 4th, 5th and 6th year secondary school students. ´ó·¢ÌåÓýÔÚÏß_´ó·¢ÌåÓý-Ͷע|¹ÙÍø during language week include:

Virtual workshops and lecture taster sessions are delivered by experts, artists and language instructors relating to the following languages: Chinese, French, German, Irish, Japanese and Spanish.

EN: When you draw a circle, what do you see? A face? The sun? A plate? In this workshop, we¡¯ll be using simple shapes to inspire stories. All you will need is A4 paper, some colouring pens/pencils, and your imagination to create your very own book.

Title of session: Art of the Brush: Culture & Philosophy/Ink Painting & Calligraphy - www.artofthebrush.ie

About this session: Oriental Brush Painting: Introduction to East Asian Calligraphy/Ink Brush Practice through easy and fun brush exercise.
In this workshop we will explore mindfulness, and learn to use an oriental ink brush with a brief introduction to its tradition and culture background. We will start with some simple brush exercises to get your hands in the flow. Then we will learn to draw some calligraphy strokes and some painting topics such as flowers, leaves, fish etc.
IMPORTANT: Tools & Materials
- Ink brush (watercolor brush, or any brush with a rounded tip will do)
- Black ink (or watercolor paint)

About the session: Explore the German words you didn¡¯t know you already had, and get some first glimpses of German culture and of Berlin! You will also find out more about the special language powerhouses of German: compound nouns, for example: Handschuhe = ¡®hand shoes¡¯ (shoes for your hands, i.e. gloves).

Title of session: Onomatopoeia! A reflection of the Japanese worldview

About the session: How would you describe the sound of heavy rain? How would you describe the sound of falling flower petals? The sound of thunder, a gust of wind, or smoothly running water?
In this session, participants will learn a set of Japanese onomatopoeia and by doing so, they will learn about the Japanese way of perceiving and representing the world.

Title of Session: What¡¯s in a placename?
Presented by: Colm ? Ciardubh¨¢in
About the session: Placenames do more than tell us what a place is ¡®called¡¯. Embedded in a placename can be information about landscapes, people who lived there and the languages they spoke.
We will look at what the county names of Ireland can tell us about language and history. We will also give you the tools to decode placenames in your own area.

At the School of Applied Language and Intercultural Studies at DCU, we teach Chinese, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish, and Irish is taught at our Fiontar & Scoil na Gaeilge (Enterprise and School of Irish). So if you are learning any of these languages and you want to get creative, create your own 10-word short story in our language competition as part of DCU Languages Week 2022.
1. Each student will submit one entry in one of the following six languages:
- Chinese
- French
- German
- Irish
- Japanese
- Spanish
2. Each student will write a 10 word short story. 5 words are given by DCU and you must choose another 5 words in the target language to complete your story in a sentence.
Example in English:
Here are 5 sample words given by DCU: cup, tiles, moon, dog and funny
Here is a completed 10-word story in just one sentence such as:
Funny dog, Moon, slipped on wet tiles and cup broke.
3. Here are the 5 words given by DCU in each language that we teach:
- Chinese (ÅóÓÑ£¬ÃÎÏ룬¼ÓÓÍ£¬ÊÓƵ£¬Êµ»°ÊµËµ£©
- French (cerf, musique, temp¨ºte, calin, chocolat)
- German (neugierig, Erdbeermarmelade, h¨¹pfen, Meerschweinchen, Geheimagent)
- Irish (crann, dra¨ªocht, r¨¦alta, cr¨¦, ¨®r)
- Japanese (30 characters in Japanese: Ò»·¬´óÇФʤâ¤Î?С¤µ¤ÊÈ®?¤ªºÃ¤ßŸ†¤?¤¤Ã¤µ¤Æ¤ó?¤ª¤Ð¤¢¤µ¤ó?¤æ¤¦¤¬¤¿£©¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡
- Spanish (imprevisto, aventura, sorpresa, desconocidos, mochila)
4. Go to the Entry Form tab to enter your 10-word story using the words above in the language of your choice - Chinese, French, German, Irish, Japanese or Spanish. We can only accept one entry per student.
Your Data
In order to process your entry please provide your basic details (name, surname, email, school and contact number) so that we can contact the winners. All data will be anonymised and stored securely.
The School of Applied Language and Intercultural Studies (SALIS) at DCU is conducting the competition and DCU will be the 'Data Controller' for all personal data obtained. We require your consent to process your competition entry which contains personal data.
Please ensure to tick 'Yes' to give your consent if you are happy that we hold your data until the competition is completed.
Data related to winning entries may be retained by DCU for 2 years after they are submitted for the purpose of promoting another competition of this type in the future.
All other entries and associated data will be deleted at the end of the competition. At any time you are free to withdraw your consent and DCU will delete your data.
A winner in each language will be chosen for the best 10-word stories as judged by our DCU language experts. There will be six winners in total and each winner will receive a €200 one-for-all voucher. The closing date for entries is 4th March 2022 at 5pm sharp and prizes will be announced by DCU in April 2022.
