PhD Programme
The School of Applied Language and Intercultural Studies has a vibrant multilingual and multicultural research community. We welcome applications from potential full time and part-time PhD candidates interested in Applied Linguistics, Translation Studies, Intercultural and Migration Studies, Literary and Sexuality Studies, and interdisciplinary research (click here for more information about our areas of expertise).
SALIS provides a supportive atmosphere for research postgraduates with structured pathways, postgraduate-level modules and a focus on professional development. Our academic staff are committed to offering personal and dedicated supervision. Doctoral students have dedicated work spaces and may receive financial assistance for activities such as fieldwork and conferences (allocated on a competitive basis).
Candidates must obtain the endorsement of a member of the academic staff in SALIS. Before contacting a potential supervisor, candidates must ensure that their research topic aligns with the potential supervisor's research expertise and interest. Candidates should not contact more than one faculty member simultaneously.

Applications will be deemed ineligible in all cases where they:
- Do not contain all the required elements including the application form completed in full, two references and academic transcripts;
- Include material other than that required or exceed the word limits;
- Show evidence of plagiarism;
- Contain any false, misleading or unverifiable information;
- The application is not endorsed by a member of SALIS.
Candidates should send their applications to the SALIS School Office (salis.office@dcu.ie) marked for the attention of the Director of PhD Studies, Dr ?ine McGillicuddy.
Applications are assessed by academics from SALIS and candidates may be invited to interview. Candidates whose applications are successful will be required to apply formally to DCU via the Student Application Portal, available here. Note that applications submitted to the Student Application Portal before approval has given by the School will not be considered.

Candidates may self-fund or apply for funding schemes such as SALIS PhD Scholarship or the Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship Scheme. Note that applications submitted to external funding programmes need to be approved by the School.
