Mar chomóradh ar shaol agus saothar ár n-iar-chomhghleacaí, an Dr Peadar ? Flatharta, nach maireann, bunófar sraith léachtaí ina ainm agus beidh an léacht tionscnaimh ar siúl in Ollscoil Chathair Bhaile ?tha Cliath, Déardaoin an 12 Aibreán ar 3.00 pm i Seomra PG02, Campas na Naomh Uile, DCU.
Chaith Peadar ? Flatharta a shaol ag obair le hearnáil na Gaeilge tar éis dó tamall a chaitheamh ina bhunmhúinteoir. Shaothraigh sé le Comhdháil Náisiúnta na Gaeilge, áit ar chaith sé blianta fada ag plé le stádas na Gaeilge i ngach gné de shaol poiblí na tíre seo. Ceapadh ina Léachtóir Sinsearach in Fiontar, DCU sa bhliain 2003 é agus is iomaí cloch a chuir sé ar charn na teanga le linn a shaoil, maidir leis an mbeartas agus an phleanáil teanga, i gcomhthéacs na reachtaíochta mionteangacha, go háirithe. Bhí sé ina Cheann Scoile nuálach ar Fiontar, ina Chathaoirleach ar an ngrúpa idirnáisiúnta saineolaithe a chuir comhairle ar fáil le haghaidh Straitéis 20 Bliain an Rialtais don Ghaeilge; ina Iar-Leas-Uachtarán ar an mBiúró Eorpach um Theangacha Neamhfhorleathana agus ina bhall de Choimisiún na Gaeltachta sna blianta 2000-2002.
Is é a chara mór agus a chomhbhádóir taighde, an tOllamh Colin H. Williams, a thabharfaidh an léacht tionscnaimh, ‘A Sigh Between Two Sorrows: Reflections on Language Policy’. Ba Ollamh Taighde le Sochtheangeolaíocht i Scoil na Breatnaise, Ollscoil Chaerdydd é roimh dhul ar scor dó agus tá sé ina Ollamh Oinigh ansin anois. Anuas air sin, ceapadh ina Chomhalta Cuarta agus ina Thaighdeoir Sinsearach in Institiúid Von Hu?gel, Coláiste Edmund, Ollscoil Cambridge é. Is iad an tSochtheangeolaíocht, an Beartas Teanga sa tSochaí Ilchultúrtha, an Caidreamh Eitneach agus Mionlaigh, agus an Tíreolaíocht Pholaitiúil na príomhréimsí taighde a bhfuil spéis aige iontu.
An Coimisinéir Teanga, Rónán ? Domhnaill, a sheolfaidh Sraith Léachtaí Uí Fhlatharta agus beidh fáiltiú i ndiaidh na léachta. Fiontar & Scoil na Gaeilge DCU All Hallows Campus

In commemoration of and to honour the memory of our former colleague, Dr Peadar ? Flatharta RIP, a commemorative lecture series will be established in his name and the inaugural lecture will be held in Dublin City University, on Thursday 12 April at 3.00 pm in Room PG02, DCU All Hallows Campus.
Peadar ? Flatharta devoted his life’s work to the cause of the Irish language after spending a period of time early in his career as a primary teacher. He worked for many years with Comhdháil Náisiúnta na Gaeilge, where he laboured tirelessly for the promotion of the language in every aspect of public life in Ireland. He was appointed Senior Lecturer in Fiontar, DCU in 2003 where he continued to make an immense contribution in the area of language planning and policy, especially in the context of minority language rights. He was an innovative Head of School in Fiontar, the Chair of an international expert group which advised the Government during the development phase of the Twenty-Year Strategy for Irish, a former Vice-President of the European Bureau for Lesser-Used Languages, and a member of the Gaeltacht Commission in the years 2000-2002.
His close friend and research collaborator, Professor Colin H. Williams, will deliver the inaugural lecture, ‘A Sigh Between Two Sorrows: Reflections on Language Policy’. Prior to his retirement, Professor Williams was Research Professor in Sociolinguistics in the School of Welsh at Cardiff University, where he is now an Honorary Professor. He is currently a Visiting Fellow and a Senior Research Associate of the Von Hu?gel Institute in St Edmund's College at the University of Cambridge. His main scholarly interests are Sociolinguistics and Language Policy in Multicultural Societies, Ethnic and Minority Relations, and Political Geography.
The ? Flatharta Lecture Series will be formally launched by An Coimisinéir Teanga, Rónán ? Domhnaill, and the lecture will be followed by a reception.
