Academic biography
Professor John Costello is Full Professor of Physics, a member of the School of Physics (Physical Sciences) and is a founding member of the National Centre for Plasma Science and Technology. He served as Head of the School of Physics from 2004 to 2009, (Acting) Associate Dean (Research) in Science and Health from 2009 to 2011 and Dean of the Faculty of Science and Heath 2011-2016. He obtained his Ph.D. (1986) from University College Dublin in laser plasma spectroscopy under the direction of Prof. P K Carroll. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics and a Chartered Physicist. His research interests lie mainly in intense laser matter interaction with a special interest in photoionization processes, most recently in XUV and X-ray Free Electron Laser (FEL) fields. He is the coordinator of an EU funded European Joint Doctorate programme on EUV and X-ray science and technology - EXTATIC -
www.extatic.eu. He is a member of the UK EPSRC Peer Review College and has served/is currently serving on the advisory boards of a number of international research institutes and conferences and has served on the EPS-EGAS board and a number of Institute of Physics committees in addition to the Irish Government Task Force for the Physical Sciences. He was formerly Chair of the Euratom Fusion Development Association Contract for Ireland. He was awarded the 2017 President's Research Award for Natural Sciences, Health, Engineering and Related Disciplines.
