Academic biography

Dr Jim Conway joined DCU in 2001 as Industrial Training Manager for PRL(Plasma Research Laboratory). The main task associated with this post is to develop and run courses on plasma and vacuum technology that are specifically geared toward high-tech manufacturing companies operating in Ireland that utilise such technologies within their industrial processes. PRL became part of the National Centre for Plasma Science and Technology in 2004. Dr Conway position continues to run the education and training programs in plasma and vacuum for the NCPST. He currently runs the web based Certificate in Plasma and Vacuum studies, and is also involved in the Grad. Dip/M.Sc in Plasma and Vacuum Technology program. Dr Conway is also involved in the use of optical diagnostics to examine the chemistry associated with low temperature RF plasmas.

Research interests

Optical diagnostics for industrial plasmas. Currently working on LIF and TALIF to monitor primary species such as atomic oxygen within Argon/oxygen plasmas under various operational conditions. Negative ion density measurement in low temperature plasma using laser photodetachment in conjunction with a hairpin probe.
