BSc Chemistry with Artificial Intelligence
Overview
During the course, students will explore AI applications in a chemistry context, using large datasets, commercial computational software packages and machine learning algorithms. As students develop their understanding of how to apply AI techniques and technologies in chemistry, they will also develop transversal skills, for example in teamwork or communicative competence.
During the first two years, students will study the fundamental basis of chemistry, and from year 2 will begin to learn programming, machine learning and the skills and theory needed to apply AI to chemistry. In third year students will do an INTRA work placement, while in final year, they will carry out independent research in an area of applied chemistry.
Careers
Students will have the knowledge and skills required for both wet lab and desk applications, and can find roles in large multinational companies in the pharmaceutical or materials sectors, but could also choose to join a start-up that needs an AI specialist to help direct its activities or a small-to-medium-size company that needs desk chemists with an AI specialism.
Students studying BSc Chemistry with Artificial Intelligence are capable but not limited to working in the following roles;
- Analyst
- Consultant

In Year 3 students will have the opportunity to work in industry as part of our industrial training programme (INTRA).
In Year 4, students will also study the skills and theory they will need to apply AI to chemistry. A major element of final year is the capstone research project, in which students get to pursue independent research in an area of applied chemistry.
