There are many opportunities to get involved in sport as a volunteer sports coach during your time at DCU. DCU sports clubs recruit volunteer coaches for all levels of coaching sessions from beginners to elite. DCU recognises the important role that coaches play in DCU sports clubs. We recognise how a volunteer coach can develop on a personal and professional level as well as gaining invaluable coaching experience and competencies and skills. DCU Club Life Committee (CLC) recognises the value of volunteer coaches and provides the developmental opportunities and supports below for student coaches. Student Sport Ireland - Women’s Student Coaching Academy (WSCA)
The Student Sport Ireland Women’s Student Coaching Academy (WSCA) is a national initiative that helps students develop as coaches by providing a variety of support systems that allow them to grow and realise their coaching potential. The programme provides opportunities for five female DCU students in Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Soccer, or Rugby to develop as sports coaches and to avail of benefits such as:
- a mentor coach in their respective sport
- a coaching qualification provided by their respective NGB
- networking days with the WSCA members
- WSCA kit
The closing date for applications for the 2023-2024 academic year is Monday the 7th of August 2023. Full programme details and a WSCA application form can be found on the Student Sport Ireland website.
Developmental Opportunities for Student Coaches
Student coaches are deemed to be volunteer coaches and are unpaid positions. Upon request to the CLC, a development fund may be allocated to the volunteer coach to enhance the individual’s coaching qualification. The student’s year of study, potential contribution to their DCU club, and relevance of coaching qualifications will be taken into account.
Award for Excellence in Coaching
Coaches may be nominated by their respective sports clubs for an award for Excellence in Coaching at the annual DCU Club & Society Awards. The award is open to paid and volunteer coaches that have displayed evidence of supporting increase/sustained participation, evidence of improving performers and /or team, contribution to the wider community, involvement in external events, current coaching qualifications and additional personal development undertaken and mentoring and developing other coaches..
