Anne Marie Kavanagh (PhD) is Assistant Professor in Ethical and Intercultural Education in the School of Human Development, DCU Institute of Education. She teaches and researches in the areas of ethical education, social justice education, intercultural education, climate justice education and human rights education. 

She is currently PI on an ETBI funded project which is developing an e-Learning module for teachers in ETBI schools on supporting social class and cultural diversity. She is also the DCU representative on the Advisory Committee for the Framework for the Recognition of Qualification to Teach Ethical, Multi-Belief and Values Education being led by Educate Together and ETBI.

She is a member of the steering committee of the DCU Centre for Human Rights and Citizenship Education (CHRCE) and a member of the DCU Anti-Bullying Centre. In 2021, her first co-edited book (with Prof Fionnuala Waldron & Dr Benjamin Mallon) 'Teaching for Social Justice and Sustainable Development Across the Primary Curriculum' was published by Routledge. This volume supports educators in integrating meaningful education for social justice and sustainability across a wide range of curricular subjects at primary level.

Anne Marie was awarded the INTO Vere Foster Medal in 2004 for obtaining the highest marks in Teaching Practice and the Curriculum Areas of Education over the three-year BEd programme in St. Patrick's College.  In 2006, she was awarded the Kellogg's Scholarship and completed an MEd in Education (St. Patrick's College). In 2009, she received the Michael Jordan Fellowship in Education and completed her PhD at DCU under the supervision of Professor Fionnuala Waldron and Dr Audrey Bryan. In 2015, she was voted Lecturer of the Year by the students of St. Patrick's College.   

Anne Marie is the School of Human Development nominee on the Faculty Research Committee, and the BEd Erasmus Academic Coordinator (shared with her colleague Dr Rowan Oberman). She is the Community Nominee and Acting Chairperson of the Board of Management of Killester Raheny Clontarf Educate Together National School. 

Anne Marie welcomes contact from anyone interested in the areas of ethical education, social justice education, intercultural education, climate justice education and human rights education.

Research Projects

Classrooms for climate justice? Exploring pedagogic opportunities for critical climate change education in England and Ireland. Team member The proposed research will work alongside educators to explore the opportunities and challenges of incorporating climate justice into primary and secondary education in England and Ireland. Issues of climate justice are increasingly foregrounded in scientific and policy communications on climate change, and there is growing theoretical interest in climate justice education. Recent surveys suggest that students and educators desire greater attention to issues of justice and equity in climate change education. This timely and pioneering research will take place in England and Ireland, two national contexts with policy aspirations to develop climate and sustainability education. The research will support educators as they consider, experiment with and reflect upon opportunities for climate justice education in the context of their pedagogic practice. It will be led by an interdisciplinary team across three universities with shared interests in developing climate justice education as both theory and praxis. 01/10/2024 29/08/2025
