DCU rises in QS World University Rankings

This year’s QS World University Rankings is the largest ever, with 1,500 universities across 104 locations, up from 1,418 last year
This year, DCU have been ranked in joint 436th place globally

Dublin City University has advanced to joint 436th place in the 2024 edition of the QS World University Rankings, released today by global higher education analyst QS Quacquarelli Symonds.

This year’s QS World University Rankings is the largest ever, with 1,500 universities across 104 locations, up from 1,418 last year. Dublin City University has risen 35 places in the global rankings, which take into account 17.5 million academic papers published between 2017 and 2021, and the 141.6 million citations received by those papers; they also account for the expert opinions of over 144,000 academic faculty and over 98,000 employers around the world.

I am very pleased that the University is continuing to advance in Higher Education’s increasingly competitive global landscape. Our strong performance in these rankings is a reflection of the extraordinary work of DCU staff. Their commitment to the DCU mission ‘to transform lives and societies’ is key to our success and our reputation as a world class university.

This year, QS introduced a new Sustainability metric, examining how universities are tackling the world's environmental and social challenges. DCU ranked joint 137th globally in Sustainability, reflecting the university's commitment to making decisions that lead to a zero-carbon organisation, and to embedding sustainability at the core of teaching and learning, research, development and innovation.

In March this year, the QS World University Rankings by Subject showed DCU’s Communications programme retained its place as the best course of its type in the country, while the university’s courses in linguistics and education remain rated in the top two in Ireland. Computer Science at Dublin City University also advanced into the top 201-250 of computing programmes worldwide.

The QS World University Subject Rankings rank 1,594 universities across 54 subjects, and other subject rankings highlights for Dublin City University included: 

  • Strong rankings across business subjects, with DCU’s Accounting and Finance course and Business and Management ranked third nationally
  • Sports related subjects at DCU are ranked in the top 101-140 courses globally
  • A strong performance by the university’s politics and international studies programmes has resulted in global ranking of 151-200, with the subject ranked third nationally
