The event brought together 37 attendees to explore effective strategies for enhancing patient and public involvement (PPI) in health research.
The day commenced with a warm welcome from Prof. Veronica Lambert, PPI Ignite Network at DCU co-lead, who introduced the event’s objectives and acknowledged the contributions of local partners, funders and event organisers. The morning session featured a fantastic keynote presentation by Dr. Sara Colomer-Lahiguera, a Senior Lecturer at the University of Lausanne, who shared insights on recruiting PPI contributors. Her presentation, titled "The PatientLab in Oncology: Empowering Patient Voices through a Platform for PPI in Research and Training," emphasized the importance of integrating patient perspectives into all stages of the research process.
Following Sara's keynote, Dr. Lucy Whiston, the PPI Ignite Network at DCU programme manager, moderated a panel discussion. The panel included Jane Clare, the Palliative Care Research Network (PCRN) Project Manager at the All Ireland Institute of Hospice and Palliative Care Research Network, Will Higgins, a PPI contributor working with Voices 4 Care, Gina Walsh, a PPI contributor from the PANO Trial research team and Shauna Malone Gill, a research assistant within the PPI Ignite Network at DCU and previous PPI Ignite seed funding recipient for her role with the PANO Trial in DCU. Each panellist shared their experiences and challenges in PPI recruitment, enriching the discussion with practical insights.
The first half of the event concluded with an engaging audience Q&A session and photographs taken by Cillian Doyle.
After lunch, attendees participated in breakout group discussions focused on finding PPI contributors. Facilitators Naomi Walsh, Jim Walsh, Peter Hyde and Lucy Whiston held roundtable discussions on challenges in recruitment, best practices, and the resources necessary for effective PPI involvement. These collaborative sessions aimed to generate actionable ideas and strategies that could help attendees in their PPI implementation as well as the creation of future resources.
The afternoon session also included presentations on valuable resources for PPI recruitment, featuring contributions from Dr. Sarah Delaney of Health Research Charities Ireland and the PPI Ignite Network who presented on “Charities and researchers partnering for societal benefit”, and Edel Murphy from the PPI Ignite Network’s National Office who presented on the PPI Ignite Network PPI Opportunities Noticeboard. Dr. Meaghan Gilfoyle of the PPI Ignite Network at the University of Limerick also recorded a presentation featuring recommendations for PPI recruitment. Each speaker provided valuable insights into successful PPI practices and shared resources that attendees could leverage in their research initiatives.
The event concluded with closing remarks by Suzanne Smith from NetwellCASALA who expressed gratitude to the funders, speakers, and all participants for their contributions and engagement throughout the day.
The seminar successfully fostered an environment for knowledge exchange and collaboration, emphasizing the critical role of PPI in health and social care research. This event served as a valuable platform for networking, setting the stage for future collaborations in health and social care research, paving the way for more inclusive and impactful research initiatives in the future.
