President’s Award celebrate DCU engagement

The 2013 DCU President’s Awards for Engagement have been presented at a special ceremony in The Helix.  The awards celebrate outstanding contributions by staff and students in the areas of civic, public, social enterprise and student engagement both within and outside DCU.

The winner in the Staff category was Dr Adam McAuley of the School of Law and Government in recognition of his work as module co-ordinator for the ‘Placement:  Law in Society’ initiative which helps law students achieve their potential while assisting community partner or enterprises such as the Legal Aid Board, the Immigrant council of Ireland, Inclusion Ireland and the Irish Prison Service.

In the Student category, first year students in the School of Nursing & Human Sciences were recognised for their volunteering placements with marginalised groups.  The placements involve active voluntary participation by each student in a health-related community based service such as those for children, drug users and people who are homeless.

Speaking at this year’s awards ceremony, Professor Ronnie Munck, Head of Civic Engagement at DCU said,

“Our very worthy winners this year of the President’s Awards for Engagement reflect a real surge in commitment across the various parts of the DCU community, including the linked colleges.  It augurs well for DCU maintaining its leading national role as a model of best practice for higher education’s engagement with society.”

Special mentions were also given to:

  • Jane Suiter (School of Communications) and Eoin O’Malley (School of Law and Government) for the part they have played in the establishment of the Constitutional Convention which is charged with making recommendations to Government on possible changes to the Constitution.
