Job vacancy in the School of Law and Government

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for the position of Lecturer in Politics in the School of Law and Government. Fixed term 8-month contract.

The School of Law and Government

The School of Law and Government is an ambitious, research-intensive school. It has a range of programmes at BA, MA, and PhD level.   It offers seven taught postgraduate programmes, including the MSc in Public Policy.  The School has over forty research students and offers a structured PhD in Politics and International Relations. 

The School of Law and Government intends to appoint a new Lecturer in Politics, to begin on 1 January 2024. The successful candidate will be expected to teach three Undergraduate modules including Comparative politics. The School is committed to high quality research, expects its staff to publish regularly in leading journals and with leading university presses and supports its staff in such work. We have led research programmes supported by the Irish Research Council, the EU and other national and international funders.

Skills and Experience

Applicants for the position should have or be near completion a PhD in a relevant area of social sciences.  The successful candidate will have experience of university teaching at lecturer/assistant professor level, will be able to convincingly demonstrate a strong commitment to academic research and will have a track-record of international peer-reviewed publications. The successful candidate should be capable of working in a team and contributing to developing the teaching and research agenda within the School.  

Duties and Responsibilities

Teaching and Learning

The successful candidate will be required to contribute to the development, teaching, assessment, and administration of our modules across a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes: 

  • To include the design and delivery of modules in Comparative Politics and/or gender and politics on the BA in Economics, Politics and Law and/or the BA in International Relations.
  • Supervising undergraduate and taught postgraduate theses, and
  • Contributing to the wider teaching of the School, as required by the Head of School.

Research and Scholarship

The successful candidate will be committed to high-quality research and publication in the field of public policy on an individual and a collaborative basis. The successful candidate will be supported and encouraged to:

  • Publish articles in leading peer-review journals and/or books with high-profile publishers;
  • Develop and support research initiatives with the School Law and Government and the wider university;

Service and Contribution to University and Society

Activities taken on the successful candidate¡¯s own initiative, or allocated by the Head of School, may include:

  • Engaging with policy-makers and the media,
  • Participating in school and university meetings, 
  • Representing the School in marketing and the recruitment of students,
  • Developing relationships with stakeholders within and outside the University.

Mandatory training

The postholder will be required to undertake the following mandatory compliance training: Orientation, Health & Safety, and Data Protection (GDPR). Other training may need to be undertaken when appropriate.

Salary Scales

Lecturer below bar: €44,875-61,328
Appointment will be commensurate with qualifications and experience, and will be made on the appropriate point of the Lecturer (below bar) salary scale in line with current Government pay policy.
