Organised by Marnie Hay (School of History and Geography) and Sharon Murphy (School of English)
Date: Saturday, 27 February 2016
Location: St. Patrick's Campus, DCU
Children and the Irish Revolution is a multidisciplinary symposium exploring children’s engagement with the Irish Revolution from the perspectives of history, literature, and education.
Joe Duffy, broadcaster and author of Children of the Rising (Hachette Books Ireland, 2015), will make the opening remarks. The history session examines the actual experiences of children during the years of the Irish Revolution. How the 1916 Easter Rising has been depicted in recent children’s fiction, including Sheena Wilkinson’s new novel, Name Upon Name (Little Island, 2015), is among the topics covered by the literature panel.
The classroom challenges of teaching children about the Irish Revolution are the focus of the education session. The symposium closes with a roundtable discussion to provide an opportunity for speakers and audience members to draw the three disciplinary strands together.
