I chose this course as I wanted to build on the knowledge acquired in the BEng in Mechanical & Manufacturing with the requirements of Industry in mind. The Simulation-driven design major had a diverse combination of modules. Returning to DCU was an easy decision given the friendly and knowledgeable staff, state of the art facilities, and career prospects as a Graduate. Completing this course has been extremely rewarding, and has helped me understand where my passion lies by exposing me to interesting challenges within the industry. It has also given me a newfound confidence in my abilities that I look forward to applying over the course of my career. The range of modules was vast and each module was industry-oriented, with every assessment relating to real-world problems.
My favourite modules were Computational Thermofluid Dynamics and Advanced Finite Element Analysis.The Energy Systems Decarbonisation module was another favourite of mine, as I’m very interested in the role I can play in the road to net zero as an Engineer. This module significantly improved my understanding of what a successful energy transition looks like by exposing me to the challenges and potential solutions within various sectors.
I currently work for Ireland’s leading supplier of Ultra-Pure Water Solutions and Technologies. This course has given me a very comprehensive understanding of fluid mechanics that allowed me to understand the fundamentals of system design. The year-long project introduced me to project management, water system design, computer aided drawing, material selection, data analysis, and report writing; all of which I use within my job. These enhanced my employability, and were critical in securing my current position. Don’t choose your modules to suit a job, but choose modules you have a genuine passion in, which in turn will enable you to explore career opportunities that interest you.There is so much to be gained from total engagement in this course.
