Two Recent Publications from Dr Peter Admirand
Dr Peter Admirand has recently published two journal articles that will be of interest to friends of the Centre for Interreligious Dialogue:
In International Studies in Catholic Education, Dr Admirand has published an essay entitled 'Why Liberation Theology Should Be Taught in Catholic Secondary Schools'. In this paper Dr Admirand examines why liberation theology needs to be a core resource in religious education settings, especially in Catholic secondary schools. The article first touches on key tenets of liberation theology and the reasons why it was silenced and underused. Admirand then analyses poverty in the Jewish tradition as an interfaith resource and challenge. He next highlights three challenges of teaching liberation theology in secondary classrooms and closes the article responding to these challenges with the benefits of teaching liberation theology.

In Journal: Studies in Comics, Dr Admirand has published an essay entitled 'The Devil in the Details: Essay Review of: Frank Miller’s Daredevil and the Ends of Heroism'. This paper combines Peter's interests in ethics and comics to reflect on the meaning of heroism based on the recent book, Frank Miller’s Daredevil and the Ends of Heroism. The essay opens:
'Who is your hero? Such a question is often asked of us in grade school, and is one we sometimes hear in commercials, or read on Hallmark cards. As a child, I usually answered, ‘my aunt’. She is a nun in the Catholic Church who has devoted her entire adult life to the plight of the poor and marginalized. But ‘hero’ is a plastic word and our usual image of one often entails some tincture of violence. Are the true heroes those who meet violence with potent non-violence, and do they, like Gandhi, like Martin Luther King Jr., like Oscar Romero, like Jesus – only become inevitable victims?'
