AS Student Life
Guest Lectures
As part of the AS4 programme, students are exposed to special Guest Lectures series within the "Advanced Analytical Applications" module. Students here all about cutting-edge research work going on in the school in areas such as pollen analysis, analysing volatiles from skin, as well as detecting and treating breast cancer. These lectures offer students valuable research insights and expose them to real-world applications of analytical techniques. These lectures inspire students, broaden their perspectives, and connect academic learning with professional practice and innovation.
Hand on experience with cutting edge analytical instruments
Across their undergraduate degree, AS students get amble hands on experience using many different types of instrumental analysis. This allows them to operate real-world instruments such as spectrophotometers, chromatographs, and mass spectrometers, essential tools in modern chemistry. This practical exposure enhances their technical proficiency, data interpretation skills, and ability to troubleshoot. Working with these instruments also prepares students for careers in research, industry, and environmental monitoring, making them more competitive in the job market.
Chemistry Competitions
Students in the AS degree have the opportunity to take part in the Eurachem Analytical Measurement Competition in Ireland, a prestigious event that brings together science students from various institutions to test their practical laboratory skills and analytical expertise. The competition focuses on precision, accuracy, and the application of advanced techniques in real-world chemical and environmental analyses. Participants work in teams, undertaking complex experiments and showcasing their problem-solving abilities while adhering to strict scientific standards. The event promotes collaboration, innovation, and the importance of high-quality measurement in science. Winning this competition is highly regarded and provides excellent networking opportunities with industry professionals, enhancing career prospects in analytical chemistry and related fields.
