Research Title: The efficacy of plant-based protein compared to high-quality animal-based protein on MPS, anabolic signalling, post-exercise recovery, and oxidative stress in masters endurance athletes following acute prolonged endurance exercise

Supervisor: Dr Brendan Egan
Research Summary: Post-exercise protein intake supports training adaptations and sports performance by maximizing post-exercise muscle repair, growth and recovery, adopting training load, eliminating overtraining symptom and improving innate and adaptive immunity. However, the type of protein consumed is critical in stimulating the muscle anabolic process. Given the significant decrease in muscle mass, skeletal protein turnover and postexercise muscle protein synthesis rates with aging in masters endurance athletes, optimising protein intake for postexercise muscle protein synthesis will play a critical role in both maintaining health and performance. To our knowledge, to date there has been no evaluation of how different types of protein regulate muscle protein metabolism in masters endurance athletes after exercise. Therefore, the main aim of my research is to investigate the efficacy of plant-based protein compared to high-quality animal-based protein on MPS, anabolic signalling, post-exercise recovery, and oxidative stress in male and female masters endurance athletes.
