Research Title: The kinetic and kinematic risk factors of running-related injuries: A prospective study.
Year Commenced: 2017
Anticipated Year of Completion: 2022
Supervisors: Prof. Kieran Moran, Dr. Siobhán O’Connor, Dr. Enda Whyte.
Research Summary:
Running is a hugely popular activity, boasting benefits to cardiovascular, musculoskeletal and mental health. Running-related injuries are a prevalent issue however, with several risk factors proposed to date. Some of these factors include previous injury, running technique, impact forces on ground contact, and training habits. The literature consists largely of retrospectively designed research, limiting our capacity to differentiate between cause and effect. The aim of our research is to use state of the art technology to capture detailed motion analysis on running technique and impact forces, and to subsequently track runners and their injuries over the course of 18 months prospectively, to help determine the potential causes of injury in this population.
