Photonic Applications and Technologies
This microcredential will equip students with a comprehensive grasp of the telecommunications industry, as well as the significance of photonic technologies in the operation of the heterogeneous broadband networks. Building on the primitive knowledge on optical communications, this course delves into the demands of various network segments, addressing both technological and business/cost considerations, and how they are fulfilled. A series of case scenarios will be presented, providing the students with a practical knowledge of network design, operation and performance metrics.
1. To demonstrate knowledge and detailed appreciation of the theoretical founding principles and current implementation of optical communications.
2. To identify and categorise the constraints set by various optical network segments.
3. To analyse the role of photonic technologies in each of the network segments.
4. To calculate the performance metrics and analyse reasons for system performance degradation in different sectors.
5. To evaluate potential optical network evolution paths/technology roadmaps.
6. To specify mechanisms to deal with the trade-off between the spectral efficiency and transmission distance as applied to various sectors of the network.
7. To conduct literature searches, abstract and summarise relevant techniques in photonic applications, and demonstrate scientific report writing at a master¡¯s level.
A Primary Honours degree, Level 8 in Electronic/Electrical/Computer Engineering, Applied Physics, Computer Sciences or other Cognate/Engineering Disciplines. Applications are also invited from diverse educational and/or employment backgrounds, with applications evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
