Energy System Decarbonisation
This micro-credential offers students a comprehensive understanding of the core concepts related to energy system decarbonisation and its associated challenges. By exploring key drivers such as climate change, resource depletion, and sustainable development on both national and international levels, students will gain valuable insights into the complexities of this field. This course empowers students to critically analyse the technical, social, political, and business policy issues that arise as a result of energy system decarbonisation efforts. By engaging in such analysis, students will develop a well-rounded perspective on the subject matter and be better equipped to address these multifaceted challenges.
Upon successful completion of this micro-credential students will be able to:
- Explain the challenges of climate change and fossil fuel resource depletion at global and national levels.
- Explain the system characteristics of key energy supply technologies (FF, VRE, BE, CCS, Nuclear fission).
- Explain the system characteristics of energy consumption (sectors: heat, transport, electricity; demand reduction, efficiency, rebound).
- Explain the potential decarbonisation roles of diverse energy conversion and storage technologies.
- Critically assess alternative decarbonisation strategies and corresponding energy system configurations and evolution.
- Critically discuss the interactions between climate, energy, development, ethics and justice (globally and nationally).
- Formulate and critically assess policy proposals in relation to energy system decarbonisation.
A Primary Honours degree, Level 8 in Electronic/Electrical/Computer Engineering, Applied Physics, Computer Sciences or other Cognate/Engineering Disciplines. Applications are also invited from diverse educational and/or employment backgrounds, with applications evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

There is no availability for a deferred entry onto a micro-credential.
